FILM NERD PROJECT: Horror and exploitation films

I've always loved older movies, specifically those from the seventies and eighties. There is just a certain...feel about them. Especially the horror movies. Most of the really good stuff comes from those two decades. Heck, we owe the modern slasher movie to the seventies.

So, in honor of this, I've decided to watch all the nitty, gritty movies from the horror, exploitation, and otherwise grindhouse-style genres over the next year.

1. An emphasis will be placed on low-budget, exploitation, horror and slasher movies, but I will try to watch as much 70s and 80s horror.
2. All genres of exploitation movies will be considered. (blaxploitation, shocksploitation, spaghetti westerns, etc.)
3. Slasher horror is preferred.
4. Some of these movies might get knocked off the list. I do have limits, and some of the more...triggering movies I might not be able to handle.
5. Certain modern movies that invoke grindhouse/exploitation style will be watched (ie, Death Proof, Planet Terror, Kill Bill)
6. All movies listed are original, not modern remakes.

YES I KNOW I HAVE A WRITING JOURNAL. But I am too proud of this.

I saw this prompt posted over at st_xi_kink. Of course, no one had filled it because it wasn't Kirk/Spock buttsex. I HAD TO DO THIS ONE. I love Uhura and bb Pavel way too much. Usually, I am a staunch Spock/Uhura fan but I could not resist. It was as sweet as candy.

Also, lol @ a prompt filled from a kink meme not actually having any sex in it. This is pure fluff.

TITLE: Everything You Want
FANDOM: Star Trek XI
PAIRING/CHRACTERS: Onesided Chekov/Uhura, implied Spock/Uhura
RATING: K
PROMPT: "Chekov has a crush on Uhura. Uhura has a tiff with Spock so she goes to cool down with shopping at a space port, dragging Chekov along with her to carry her bags. Chekov thinks it is a date and at the end of the day tells her how he feels in Russian."

Pavel Chekov knew a lot.

They didn't call him "Wiz Kid" for nothing. He knew a ridiculous amount of mathematical theorems. He could tell you what things were Russian inventions (all the good things came from Mother Russia). Additionally, the ensign was well-versed in Starfleet protocol: well-versed enough to be able to recite it from memory.

One thing he did not know was how in the world he ended up on a date with Lieutenant Uhura. Especially considering that an hour ago he was minding his own business.

Not that he minded. Quite the opposite, really. Chekov had become quite taken by the slightly older woman ever since she first came on the bridge. She was gorgeous, of course, but that wasn't the only reason he developed an attraction to her. No, it was her mind. She was an exceptional xenolinguist and perhaps the most gifted communicator he had ever met.

Communication was something he was never good at. He had always been enthusiastic; however, back in his academy days, he had been unbearably shy. Partly because of the language barrier. It took people a while to get used to his heavy accent and having to repeat himself multiple times frustrated him to no end.

Another part of it was that he was so much younger than the other cadets. They would patronize him to no end. Leave him out of their activities. Girls would laugh if he approached him. Perhaps this was why he admired Uhura so much. She made people respect her.

"Pavel, I want to stop at this store."

The voice he was so enchanted by pulled him from his thoughts. Uhura and Chekov were at a shopping center in a nearby space port. The ensign had been coerced into this by an oddly blustery communications offer. Chekov was certain he had heard her yelling earlier at a certain Vulcan as he passed by her quarters. This was odd. The pair almost never got into fights.

Unless...

The Russian watched silently as the woman examined a collection of jewelry. Had Uhura and Spock decided to call it quits? A tiny corner of the young man's mind felt pleasure at that notion. He did respect his superior officer. It was just that he couldn't help the fact he was in love with the guy's girlfriend. That would put strain between any two friends.

"Do you think this looks good?," Uhura asked, holding up a intricate red gem necklace to her collar bone. Chekov nodded.

"Eet looks beauy-tiful, Lieutenant Uhura." Oh, the necklace was nice, too.

She laughed, sending shivers up the ensign's spine. "Come on, Pavel. We're off duty. You can call me Nyota."

He gulped silently. "Of course, Nyota." The usually graceful name sounded clumsy coming from his lips. She smiled warmly, then turned from him and paid for the necklace. The bag was added to the growing collection in Chekov's arms.

The two stopped at several more outlets before it was time to catch the space shuttle back to the Enterprise. Uhura grinned at the younger officer.

"I had a great time." He nodded in agreement, only half-listening to her. He wanted so badly to confess to her. It was a burning desire, to tell her exactly what she meant to him. But he couldn't. His shyness wouldn't allow it, so he would lose her. He never could confess.

At least, not in English.

"Хочу, чтобы ты была моей," he muttered, just loud enough for her to hear it. I wish you were mine. If she asked, he would lie to her about what it meant.

Pavel Chekov did not know, that as a xenolinguist, Nyota Uhura was fluent in Russian.

Comparing Macbeth to The Lion King for Brit Lit.

Disney’s The Lion King is often referred to as “Hamlet with animals”, because of its similarities with the Bard’s play. This does hold true. There is a character who murders his brother for the crown and the king’s son who wants to avenge father’s murder most foul. However, it also shares characteristics with Shakespeare’s other play about a king’s murder. The similarities between Macbeth and The Lion King are in character, theme, and plot.

The Lion King and Macbeth have characters that fit in the same archetypes. Macbeth’s character equivalent in The Lion King is Scar, the evil brother of the king. They are both ambitious and covet the idea of being king so much that they would murder for it. Mufasa, who is king of the lands where the lions dwell, is like Duncan, king of Scotland in Macbeth, in that they are good monarchs who are too trusting. The two are murdered by unexpected characters, Mufasa by his brother and Duncan by his loyal subject. Scar’s henchmen are the three hyenas. At first glance they might not seem like it, but they can be compared to the three witches. The witches provide an element of horror to Macbeth, yet they are also comic relief, like the hyenas. The prince Simba’s equivalent is a bit more difficult to define, because his character has elements of both Malcom and Macduff. The Malcom comparison is obvious, because both are rightful heirs to the throne who flee from the kingdom but return to rule at the end; the Macduff comparison is also accurate, because both Simba and Macduff lose their families and come back to avenge them and set things right.

Ambition is a theme that is present in both Macbeth and The Lion King. Scar, as well as Macbeth, has designs for the crown. The lion is so consumed with his jealousy and desire that he kills his own brother and tries to dispose of his nephew. Macbeth kills his king, too, who is his kinsman and guest. Regret is another common theme. Macbeth, as he kills Duncan, expresses regret and cannot say “amen” as he prays. Similarly, in the musical adaptation of The Lion King, Scar has a number called “The Madness of King Scar”. The lyrics are the ravings of Scar, who is regretful and haunted by his dead brother. The third theme in the two works is redemption. Simba and Malcom are both able to overcome their fathers’ deaths and take their rightful places.

Even the plots of the two are similar. At the beginning of each, Macbeth and Scar are already high-ranking; Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis and Scar is the king’s brother. However, they both get the idea of kingship in their heads. This moves them to plot the downfall of the rulers. However, the two still have thorns in their sides. Luckily, Simba and Malcom, the heirs, run away on their own. Under Macbeth’s rule, the prosperity of Scotland degrades. The same happens to the lions’ home when Scar becomes king. However, when things look their worst, the true princes return. At the end, Macbeth and Scar are both done in by what they thought were their advantages: Macbeth by the prophecy that he wouldn’t be defeated by anyone born of woman, and Scar’s hyena underlings.

Macbeth is full of common tropes used in epic stories about royalty, so it’s not that surprising that The Lion King would have things in common with it. Disney also has a long history of using classical literature as springboards for its ideas. Both The Lion King and Macbeth are rich stories that are well regarded in their genres, and it’s no wonder why they are.
